Your June Safety Checklist Before Peak Fire Season
As wildfire risk rises in Northern California with summer’s heat and dryness, June is the perfect time to prepare your property and household for the season ahead.
1. Clear Around Your Home
-
Remove dry vegetation, leaves, and debris at least 30 ft from your house.
-
Trim tree branches at least 10 ft above the ground and away from the roof.
-
Replace combustible mulch and plantings near your foundation with gravel or hardscape.
2. Harden and Protect Your Home
-
Install ember-resistant screens on vents and use metal gutter guards.
-
Seal roof gaps and clear debris from roofs and gutters regularly.
-
Consider upgrading to dual-pane tempered glass windows, fire-rated roofing, and non-combustible siding.
3. Evacuation Plan & “Go Bag” Ready
-
Identify two exit routes out of your neighborhood.
-
Prepare a go-bag with water, snacks, medications, IDs, flashlight, copies of important documents, N95 masks, and a phone charger.
-
Establish a family meeting point and practice your evacuation drill.
-
Keep your fuel tank at least ¾ full during fire season.
-
Store an emergency kit in your car — water, torch, first aid, and paper maps included.
