As winter melts into spring, communities across the globe gather to celebrate Norouz—the Persian New Year. With roots in ancient Zoroastrian traditions, Norouz is more than just a holiday. It’s a vibrant, symbolic celebration of rebirth, hope, and the promise of a fresh start.

Whether you’re honoring your heritage or discovering the tradition for the first time, Norouz offers timeless meaning and modern relevance.

What Is Norouz?

Norouz (also spelled Nowruz) translates to “new day,” and it’s celebrated on the first day of spring, typically March 20th or 21st. It aligns with the vernal equinox—when daylight and night are perfectly balanced. This balance symbolizes harmony and renewal, which are core themes of the holiday.

Celebrated by over 300 million people worldwide, Norouz is observed in Iran, Afghanistan, parts of Central Asia, and by Persian communities around the globe—including right here in Northern California.

Time-Honored Traditions

Haft-Seen Table

At the heart of every Norouz celebration is the Haft-Seen table, where seven symbolic items starting with the letter “S” in Persian are displayed. These include:

  • Sabzeh – sprouted greens, representing rebirth

  • Seer – garlic, symbolizing health and medicine

  • Seeb – apples, for beauty and good health

  • Senjed – dried oleaster fruit, symbolizing love

  • Samanu – sweet pudding, representing power and strength

  • Serkeh – vinegar, for patience and wisdom

  • Sumac – spice representing the sunrise and new beginnings

Each item carries its own unique wish for the new year, making the Haft-Seen a deeply personal and meaningful part of the holiday.

Chaharshanbe Suri

Held the Tuesday night before Norouz, this fire-jumping festival encourages participants to symbolically cleanse themselves of the past year’s worries. It’s a joyful evening filled with firelight, music, and community.

Sizdah Bedar

Thirteen days after Norouz, families head outdoors for picnics and festivities to mark the end of the holiday. It’s a time to let go of bad luck and look ahead with optimism.
